How does a machine-knitting pattern differ from a hand-knitting pattern?

On a knitting machine every stitch of a row sits on the needle bed and is knitted in a single carriage pass. So the pattern has to give needle positions, not just stitch counts, and state which side the carriage is on at each shaping. Zero Needle only produces machine-knitting patterns; it is not a hand-knitting tool.

What is needle zero?

Needle zero is the centre needle of a knitting machine bed. Needles are numbered outwards to the left and to the right from it. Zero Needle expresses cast-on and shaping as needle positions around that zero — for example from 40 left to 40 right — so the piece stays centred on the bed.

Why does the carriage side constrain shaping?

Shaping is only worked on the side opposite the carriage, and the carriage only returns to its starting side after two rows. Symmetrical shaping on both sides therefore needs an even interval: an instruction like "decrease every 3 rows at both edges" cannot be worked as written. Zero Needle flags this and can force even intervals.

Why must the swatch be blocked before it is measured?

Machine knitting changes size at the first wash. The swatch must be washed and dried exactly as the finished garment will be, otherwise the gauge you measure is not the gauge of the garment being worn and the measurements move — often by several centimetres around the bust. Zero Needle warns as long as the swatch is not marked as blocked.

Which garments does Zero Needle calculate?

Accepted Answer

Five types: sweater, tee, tank top, dress and cardigan. The constructions covered are drop shoulder and sleeveless, with round, V or boat necklines, and long, three-quarter, short or cap sleeves. Set-in sleeves and raglans are not in this version.

No. Zero Needle is a free MIT-licensed web application that runs entirely in the browser: no account, no server, no data sent anywhere. Projects stay saved in the browser and the application works offline.
